This bachelor thesis investigates the possible use of open source software in industrial automation. The two-part thesis comprises a theoretical part with basic research on open source software, its licensing models, advantages and disadvantages as well as necessary software requirements from the industry. In the second part, a supervisory system is developed exclusively based on open source software, which can be configured without technical knowledge and can collect data via OPC UA and MQTT.
“This project shows how open source software can be used in automation in a time- and cost-efficient manner. It enabled the implementation of a lot of complex functionality, which otherwise would not have been possible in such a short time.”
